Description: Before SGA’s intervention, the residents in a Hawaiian home had to live with six structural support columns in the center of their living space, which hemmed in the dining table and obstructed circulation for over 20 years. Recognizing the opportunity provided by the home’s hurricane-resistant hexagonal layout, SGA designed and installed a star-shaped steel truss system that supported the ceiling and allowed the columns to finally be removed. In addition to improving the flow through the house and revitalizing quality of life for the residents, the truss structure also becomes a piece of structural art that showcases the link between form and function.
